Crispy Yaki Onigiri Recipe

This Crispy Yaki Onigiri recipe is a delightful Japanese snack that is both easy to make and incredibly flavorful.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups short-grain sushi rice
  • 2 1/2 cups water
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon mirin
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup bonito flakes
  • 1 sheet nori, cut into strips
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs clear.
  2. Combine the rice and water in a rice cooker and cook according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  3. Once cooked, let the rice cool.
  4. In a bowl, mix the soy sauce, mirin, and bonito flakes.
  5. Shape the cooled rice into triangle forms and brush with the soy sauce mixture.
  6. Heat vegetable oil in a pan over medium heat and grill the onigiri until crispy and golden brown on each side.
  7. Serve warm, garnished with nori strips and additional soy sauce if desired.

Notes

  • For added flavor, you can mix some sesame seeds into the rice before shaping.
